Your stay from A to Z: answers to your questions

From your campsite in the Basque Country, discover:

  • Bayonne: a historic city and the economic capital of the French Basque Country. It attracts holidaymakers with its medieval center, its cathedral, its festive atmosphere and its strong rugby culture.
  • Biarritz: an iconic seaside resort renowned for its beaches, surf spots, casino, Rocher de la Vierge (Virgin's Rock), and aquarium.
  • Saint-Jean-de-Luz: an authentic fishing port with its charming old town center and a large sheltered bay.
  • Hendaye: a vast family beach with a privileged location on the Spanish border. A perfect starting point for visiting Hondarribia and San Sebastián.
  • Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: fortified town in the hinterland at the entrance to the Basque mountains and an important stop on the pilgrimage routes to Compostela.

From your campsite in the Basque Country, have fun with family or friends:

  • Surfing on the Atlantic coast: the beaches of Hendaye, Biarritz or Anglet are among the major spots in Europe for beginners and experienced surfers.
  • Scenic hikes: coastal path between Bidart and Saint-Jean-de-Luz or the GR10 in the Pyrenees.
  • Ascent of La Rhune (905 meters altitude): on foot for the more athletic from Ascain or with the Rhune rack railway.
  • Cycling tourism: Vélodyssée, Basque coastline around Hendaye and the Abbadia estate, greenway of the Bidassoa or the Nive.
  • Cultural events: festivals in Bayonne, Espelette, Urrugne and Hendaye.

For the Basque Country (French and Spanish), the best times are between April and October depending on your itinerary.

May, June, and September are often considered the most pleasant months. The weather is generally mild, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds than in the height of summer.

Do you enjoy hiking? Spring remains the perfect time to wander through nature as it awakens. The season is quieter, and there are fewer crowds.

Do you prefer the beach? Opt for July and August in the summer to enjoy higher temperatures and the many activities in the seaside resorts.

We recommend staying at Camping Ibardin in Urrugne if you want to combine mountain and sea activities from your accommodation. Nestled between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Hendaye, this Basque town offers quick access to the beaches of Socoa Bay and the Atlantic coast.

You can thus enjoy the pleasures of the Atlantic while remaining close to hiking trails, La Rhune and the Spanish border.
